My Birthday was on Sunday and Abby's was on Monday. We had a little party for Abby on Sunday evening. Ever since Eugene's birthday Abby has been asking to make her birthday cake. So, you can imagine how excited she was when the day finally came to make the cake. And, lucky for her, I took the first one out of the oven too early so she got some extra munching. One of my favorite shows is Ace of Cakes. They make cake decorating look so easy and fun, I decided to try a carved creation of my own. Hahahahaha!
My friend Tina had a round cake pan, so that worked out well for cake #2. For cake #1 I baked a sheet cake and then cut and stacked. I quickly discovered that stacking more than 2 layers can lead to cracks and collapses. So, one cardboard box, some plastic straws and several sheets of tinfoil later and I slowly started building my edible structure.
Can you guess what it is yet?
The hardest step for me was covering the carved cake with the icing layer. After carving, it was so crumbly and the icing would not stick - very frustrating.
Can you tell what it is now?
Ta Da! This whole idea started when I found VeggieTales candy on clearance after Easter. I took a picture of the cake Saturday night in case I woke up Sunday and found Larry on his face. And this is how terrible I am - I wouldn't let the kids eat the faces! I had spent so much time on these silly cakes I just couldn't bring myself to let them be completely destroyed the next day even though I made them for the kids! I felt so bad afterward because I remember as a kid how cool it was to get to eat the fun things on a cake. Next time I'll make a simple, ugly cake :)
Abby enjoyed opening gifts
and digging into the much anticipated cake.
Since Monday was her actual birthday Eugene and I treated Abby to lunch at Flight Deck. She loves airplanes and had good time watching them take off while eating. After lunch Eugene left for a work retreat, so Monday was a girl's night. We enjoyed leftover cake and ice cream and ate dinner while watching Mary Poppins.
And now we are trying to convince Abby that she is two years old. For a whole year she has held up one finger when asked how old she is and old habits are hard to break.

Hey, I just found out that Mary Poppins is coming to Keller next Summer! Not sure what age you should start taking your kids to Broadway shows but it's something Karl and I can't wait to do, whenever that ends up happening. Anyways, I was reminded that Abby liked the movie when I heard the news so I thought I'd pass it along :)
